Creativity, Confidence & Community Spirit

The Nello James Centre was home to the Abasindi drummers and dance troupe, who supported activities at the Centre, including summer projects run by the Supplementary School. The Centre also supported local rock and reggae bands, creating space for cultural expression, performance and identity.

In addition, the Nello James Youth and Drama Club ran weekly drama classes for local young people and children in the arts centre building from 1983. Events involving children and young people were aimed at promoting inclusive, non-violent and positive messages around gender, race, age, disability and lifestyles, while also being social and educational.

Sport also formed an important part of community life. The Nello James Football Club was an active group successfully run by trustee Michael March from 1975 to 2005 and won many matches in the local football league.
